A2B Plastics Ltd is a highly successful plastic injection moulding company, founded in 1958 in North Wales. The company offers a wide range of plastic injection moulders, supported by an in-house product design service and expertise in toolmaking.

A2B Plastics has clients in the Packaging, Electrical, Automotive, Medical and White Goods industries. Along with contracts for the MOD.

Andrew Brooksbank the Managing Director, had opportunities to grow the business and launch new products, that he had personally designed.

The Challenge

Andrew is an expert in plastics and design and had limited experience in new product development, marketing strategies and creating sales in new markets and raising investment.

“I knew I needed help in these areas, and that I could not achieve my objectives without help from somebody experienced in these matters”

Andrew turned to the Accelerated Growth Programme, the Welsh Government’s Business Growth Programme – which offers a bespoke package of support to Wales based businesses.

Here he met Ray Leary from Fresh Business Services, who specialises in business growth through sales and marketing and access to external investments.

Andrew set Fresh Business Services a number of objectives:

  • Raise £200,000 external investment
  • Create a marketing strategy to launch two new products
  • Implement a sales process to create new business and attract new customers
  • Manage and control the project, working closely with Andrew

The Solution

Working closely with Ray, Andrew received guidance and coaching, supported by the Accelerated Growth Programme to develop separate marketing strategies for each new product launch into separate markets – Oral care in NHS and Flood defence product for Highways and Local Authorities.

Following detailed discussions, the business identified that the innovative, un-secured Tier 1 fund (Supported by the Home Office) was ideally suited to its requirements. The fund offered not only investment but access to valuable resource to strengthen management within the growing business

Fresh Business Services linked Chinese investors to A2B Plastics, with the outcome of a Chinese investor, who invested £200,000 into the business and who is now a key member of the management team.

This investment has supported the launch of the new products into the market place.

Ray worked with the senior management team at A2B to implement, both internal marketing strategies, including areas of communications, branding, digital marketing and generally raising awareness of the products.

To date sales of the Oral care product are increasing month on month with many NHS groups agreeing to purchase the product going forward.

The launch of the Flood defence product, is iminant but there has been national interest from Local Authorities and Highways organisations, prior to official launch. A new sales and marketing strategy devised by Ray and agreed by Andrew is now underway.

It is expected to generate 20 plus new jobs in the next 24 months and attract further investment from interested parties.
